About Franklin Indiana
The garden spot of the Mid West, Franklin has a great film history, at one time being home to Majorie Main (Ma Kettle), Max Terhune (Film Cowboy Great), Andrew Duggan and director Robert Wise (WEST SIDE STORY, SOUND OF MUSIC…edited CITIZEN KANE)
Franklin, Indiana was founded in 1823. The name was suggested by Samuel Herriott, a great admirer of Benjamin Franklin. One of the pioneer fathers of the city was George King. Franklin College was established in the city in 1834.
Franklin is the county seat for Johnson County. The Artcraft Theatre downtown was built in 1922, before movies had sound. Franklin has produced two governors: Paul McNutt (1933-1937) & Roger Branigan (1965-1969). The very first Ritter’s Frozen Custard was started in Franklin in 1989.
